Milan Cortina 2026 Day 1

After a superb Opening Ceremony across Milan and Cortina on Friday evening, the first medals were awarded on on Day 1 but prior to the Opening Ceremonies, the action got underway in Curling, Figure Skating, Snowboarding, and Alpine Skiing.

The GB duo of Bruce Mouat/Jennifer Dodds made a perfect start to the Curling Mixed Doubles with five wins and currently sit atop the standings while the Figure Skating has seen three events completed with USA currently lead on 25 points while GB sit eighth on 11 points and in Snowboarding, Txema Maset Brown missed out on the Big Air final by placing 21st. 

Day 1 - Saturday Feb 7th


Alpine Skiing Men's Downhill saw history made as the first medals of the games were won, Franjo von Allmen (SUI) won in a time of 1.51.61 with Giovanni Franzoni (ITA) finishing 0.20s behind at 1.51.81 and Dominik Paris (ITA) a further 0.50s in a time of 1.52.11. 


Cross-Country Skiing Women's 10km + 10km Skiathon
 
saw Frida Karlsson (SWE) win in a time of 53:45.2 ahead of teammate Ebba Andersson (SWE) who finished 51s behind in 54.36.2 while Heidi Weng (NOR) was 1m 26s behind at 55:11.9. GB's Anna Pryce placed 42nd in a time of 1:01:09.5 finishing 7m 24 behind the leader. 

An OLYMPIC RECORD time of 3:54.28 saw Francesca Lollobrigida (ITA) win the Speed Skating Women's 3000m and uniquely she did so on her birthday as she finished 2.26s ahead of Ragne Wikilund (NOR) (3:56,54) while Valerie Maltais (CAN) (3:56.93) finished 2.65s behind.


Freestyle Skiing Women's Freeski Slopestyle
saw GB's Kirsty Muir qualify for the final on Monday 9th in third with a combined score of 64.98 behind Mathilde Gremaud (SUI) who scored 79.15 and Eileen Gu (CHN) who scored 75.30. In the Men's Slopestyle, a Norwegian 1-2 of Birk Ruud (81.75) and Tormod Frostad (79.96) with Jesper Tjader (SWE) scoring 79.83 while GB's Chris McCormick placed 26th with a score of 33.90.


Curling Mixed Doubles
saw GB duo Bruce Mouat/Jennifer Dodds continue their perfect start with a 7-5  win over Canada followed by a 6-4 victory against United States which sealed a place in the semi-finals which take place on Monday 9th and they end the day with seven wins out of seven.



Ski Jumping Women's Normal Hill Individual
was won by Anna Odine Stroem (NOR) with a total score of 267.3 finishing 1.1 points ahead of Nika Prevc (SLO) who scored 266.2 while Nozomi Maruyama (JPN) finished 5.5 points off the lead on 261.8.



Snowboard Men's Big Air
saw a Japan 1-2 as Kira Kimura won with a total score of 179.50 finishing eight points ahead of teammate Ryoma Kimata who scored 171.50 while Su Yuming (CHN) scored 168.50


Figure Skating Team Event saw two events today with the Men's Single Skating/ Ice Dance and with GB placing ninth with 12 points they miss out on the final events while USA, Japan, Italy, Canada & Georgia all qualifying for the finals. Ahead of the final day of events tomorrow, USA top the standings on 44 points ahead of Japan and Italy on 39 37 points.
