Tokyo 2020 Day Five

Day Five continued the trend of each day becoming busier than the last with 23 medal events across 11 different sports including another Swimming GOLD for GB and Charlotte Dujardin becoming GB's most decorated female Olympian.

Medals

GOLD for GB (Tom Dean, James Guy, Matthew Richards & Duncan Scott) in the Men's 4x200m Freestyle as they finished ahead of ROC (Martin Malyutin, Ivan Girev, Evgeny Rylov & Mikhail Dovgalyuk) who scooped SILVER. BRONZE went to Australia (Alexander Graham, Kyle Chalmers, Zac Incerti & Thomas Neill).


The Women's 1500m Freestyle saw double joy for USA with a 1/2 as Katie Ledecky won GOLD ahead of team-mate Erica Sullivan who scooped SILVER. BRONZE went to Sarah Kohler (GER).

The Women's 200m Freestyle saw GOLD for Ariarne Titmus (AUS) with an Olympic Record time of 1:53.50 ahead of Siobhan 
Bernadette Haughey (HKG) who scooped SILVER and Penny Oleksiak (CAN) who collected BRONZE.

The Men's 200m Butterfly GOLD went to Kristof Milak (HUN) with an Olympic Record time of 1:51.25 ahead of Tomoru Honda (JPN) who scooped SILVER and Federico Burdisso (ITA) who collected BRONZE

In the Women's 200m Individual Medley, GOLD for Yui Ohashi (JPN) ahead of USA duo Alex Walsh and Kate Douglass who collected SILVER and BRONZE. GB'S Abbie Wood and Alicia Wilson finished fourth and eighth. 

The Men's All-Around GOLD saw joy for the hosts as Daiki Hashimoto (JPN) scored 88.465 ahead of Routeng Xiao (CHN) who scooped SILVER with 88.065 while Nikita Nagornyy (ROC) collected BRONZE with 88.031. GB duo James Hall and Joe Fraser finished in eighth and ninth with 84.598 and 84.499.


The Men's tournament saw Fiji successfully defend their 2016 title by winning GOLD with a 27-12 victory over New Zealand who scooped SILVER. BRONZE went to Argentina as they defeated GB 17-12.


The Women's Double Sculls saw GOLD for the pair of Ancuta Bodnar/Simona Radis (ROU) ahead of Brooke Donoghue/Hannah Osbourne (NZL) who took SILVERBRONZE went to the pairing of Lisa Scheenaard/Roos De Jong (NED).

In the Men's Double Sculls, GOLD was sealed by the pair of Hugo Boucheron/Matthieu Androdias (FRA) ahead of Melvin Twellar/Stef Broenik (NED) who scooper SILVER and Zhiyu Liu/Liang Zhang (CHN) collected BRONZE. GB pairing Graeme Thomas/John Collins finished in fourth.

GOLD in the Women's Four for Australia (Lucy Stephan, Rosemary Popa, Jessica Morrison & Annabelle McIntyre) ahead of Netherlands (Ellen Hogerwerf, Karolien Florijn, Ymkje Clevering & Veronique Meester) who took SILVER and Ireland (Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe, Fiona Murtagh & Emily Hegarty) collected BRONZE. GB's quartet of Rowan McKellar, Harriet Taylor, Karen Bennett & Rebecca Shorten finished fourth. 

In the Men's Four, Australia (Alexander Purnell, Spencer Turrin, Jack Hargreaves & Alexander Hill) won GOLD ahead of Romania (Mihaita Tiganescu, Muguret Vasile Semciuc, Stefan Berariu & Cosmic Pascari) who took SILVER. BRONZE went to Italy (Matteo Castaldo, Marco Di Costanzo, Matteo Lodo & Giuseppe Vicino). GB's quartet of Oliver Cook, Matthew Rossiter, Rory Gibbs & Shotto Carnegie) finished fourth. 

The Men's Quadruple Sculls saw GOLD won by Netherlands (Lucas Theodoor Dirk Uittenbogaard, Abe Wiersma, Tone Wieten & Koen Metsemakers) ahead of the GB quartet of Harry Leask, Angus Groom, Tom Barras & Jack Beaumont scoop SILVER while Australia (Jack Cleary, Caleb Antill, Cameron Girdlestone & Luke Letcher) collected BRONZE. 

The Women's Quadruple Sculls saw China (Yunxia Chen, Ling Ziang, Yang Lyu & Xiaotang Cui) win GOLD ahead of Poland (Agnieszka Kobus-Zawojska, Marta Wieliczko, Maria Sajdak & Katarzyna Zillmann) who scooped SILVER. BRONZE went to Australia (Rita Thompson, Rowena Meredith, Harriet Hudson & Caitlin Cronin). 


The Women's Individual Time Trial saw GOLD won by Annemiek Van Vleuten (NED) ahead of Marlen Reusser (SUI) who scooped SILVER and Anna Van Der Breggen (NED) who collected BRONZE. GB's Anna Shackley finished in 18th. 

In the Men's Individual Time Trial, GOLD went to Primoz Roglic (SLO) ahead of Tom Dumoulin (NED) who took SILVER and Rohan Dennis (AUS) who collected BRONZE. GB duo Geraint Thomas and Tao Hart Geoghegan finished in 12th and 29th.

GOLD for Chinese pair Zongyuan Wang/Siyi Xie in the Men's Synchronised 3m Springboard ahead of Andrew Capobianco/Michael Hixon (USA) who took SILVER while Patrick Hausding/Lars Rudiger (GER) collected BRONZE. GB pair Jack Laugher/Daniel Goodfellow finished in seventh. 


Double joy for Germany in the Grand Prix Freestyle as Jessica von Bredow-Werndl won GOLD ahead of team-mate Isabell Werth who took SILVER. BRONZE went to GB's Charlotte Dujardin as she became the most decorated GB female Olympian with her sixth medal. Fellow Brits Carl Hester and Lottie Fry finished in eighth and 13th. 


The Men's Sabre Team saw reigning champions Republic of Korea win GOLD to retain their title with a 45-26 defeat of Italy. Hungary collected BRONZE with a 45-40 win over Germany


The Men's 90kg saw GOLD won by Lasha Bekauri (GEO) ahead of Eduard Trippel (GER) who claimed SILVER. BRONZES went to Krisztian Toth (HUN) and Davlat Bobonov (UZB) as they defeated Mikhail Igolnikov (ROC) and Mihael Zgank (TUR).

In the Women's -70kg, GOLD was won by Chizuru Arai (JPN) ahead of Michaela Polleres (AUT). BRONZES went to Sanne Van Dijke (NED) and Madina Taimazova (ROC) as they defeated Giovanna Scoccimarro (ITA) and Barbara Matic (CRO). 

The Men's tournament saw GOLD won by Latvia after a 21-18 victory over ROC who took SILVER. The BRONZE went to Serbia as they sealed a 21-10 win over Belgium

The Women's tournament saw GOLD won by USA with an 18-15 success over ROC who scooped SILVER. The BRONZE went to China as they sealed a 16-14 win over France.


A WORLD RECORD/Olympic Record for Zhiyong Shi (CHN) as he took GOLD in the Men's 73kg with a total of 364. SILVER went to Julio Ruben Mayora Pernia (VEN) with 346 while Briken Calja (ALB) collected the BRONZE with a score of 341.

Karriss Artingstall guaranteed a medal in the Featherweight as she progressed to the semi-finals on Saturday. 



Despair for Andy Murray / Joe Salisbury as they exited Men's Doubles while Liam Broady exited the Men's Singles. 




Mallory Franklin reached the Slalom semi-final as the last qualifier.
