Tokyo 2020 Day Two

After an amazing opening day, Day Two saw 18 medal events across ten sports including the opening two medals of the games for Team GB in Judo & Taekwondo while there were also a few shock exits for medal hopefuls.

Day Two's first medals came in the pool in the Men's 400m Individual Medley as Chase Kalisz (USA) stormed to the GOLD in 4:09.42 ahead of team-mate Jay Litherland who took SILVER in 4:10.28 and Brendon Smith (AUS) who claimed BRONZE in 4:10.38. GB's Max Litchfield finished joint 4th with David Verraszto (ITA) with a time of 4:10.59. 

The Women's 400m Individual Medley saw joy for the hosts as Yui Ohashi (JPN) won the GOLD in a time of 4:32.08 ahead of a USA 2-3 of Emma Weyant who took SILVER and Hali Flickinger who collected BRONZE. GB's Aimee Willmott finished in seventh. 

A huge shock in the Men's 400m Freestyle as 18 year old Ahmed Hafnaoui (TUN) won GOLD in a time of 3:43.36 ahead of Jack McLoughlin (AUS) who claimed SILVER with a time of 3:43.52 and Kieran Smith (USA) taking BRONZE in 3:43.94.

The Women's 4x100m Freestyle Relay saw a new WORLD RECORD time of 3:29.69 as Australia (Meg Harris, Emma McKeon and sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell ) thundered to GOLD ahead of Canada (Kayla Sanchez, Margaret McNeil, Rebecca Smith and Penny Oleksiak) who took SILVER and USA (Erika Brown, Abbey Weitzeil, Natalie Hinds and Simone Manuel) who claimed BRONZE. The GB quartet of Anna Hopkin, Abbie Wood, Lucy Hope and Freya Anderson finished fifth. 

Vitalina Batsarashkina (ROC) set a new Olympic Record of 240.3 to take GOLD in the Women's 10m Air Pistol ahead of Antoaneta Kostadinova (BUL) who won SILVER with Ranxin Jiang (CHN) claiming BRONZE.

Later on in the day, the Men's 10m Air Rifle saw an Olympic Record for William Shaner (USA) as his score of 251.6 secured GOLD. Chinese duo Lihao Sheng & Haoran Yang collected SILVER and BRONZE with scores of 250.9 and 229.4.



The Women's -57kg saw GOLD for 18 year old Anastasija Zolotic (USA) as she defeated Tatiana Minina (ROC) 25-17. BRONZES went to Kubra Hatice Ilgun (TUR) & Chia-Ling Lo (TPE) as they won the repecharges against Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin (EOR) & Tekiath Ben Yessouf

The Men's -68kg saw Ulugbek Rashitov (UZB) win GOLD with a 33-29 over Bradly Sinden (GBR) who collected SILVER. BRONZES went to Shuai Zhao (CHN) & Hakan Recber (TUR) as they won the repecharges against Daehoon Lee (KOR) & Nedzad Husic (BIH)


An Olympic Record in the Men's 61kg as Fabian Li (CHN) took GOLD with a score of 313 ahead of Yuli Eko Irawan (INA) who claimed SILVER with 302 and Igor Son (KAZ) collected BRONZE with a score of 294.

Following the 61kg was the Men's 67kg and another Olympic Record for China as Lijun Chen edged GOLD with 332 ahead of Luis Javier Mosquera Lozano (COL) who sealed SILVER with 331 while Mirko Zanni (ITA) collected BRONZE with 322.

The first ever Men's Street GOLD saw joy for the hosts as Yuto Horigoma (JPN) with a score of 37.18. Kelvin Hoefler (BRA) took SILVER with a score of 36.15 while Jagger Eaton (USA) collected BRONZE with a score of 35.35.


The Women's -52kg proved to be a joyous one for the hosts as Uta Abe (JPN) took GOLD after defeating Amandine Buchard (FRA). BRONZES went to Odette Giuffrida (ITA) & GB's Chelsie Giles who claimed our first medal of the games with the two defeating Reka Pupp (HUN) & Fabienne Kocher (SUI).

The Men's -66kg saw history as after his sister won above, Hifumi Abe (JPN) won GOLD by defeating Vazha Margvelashvili (GEO). BRONZES were collected by Baul An (KOR) & Daniel Cargnin (BRA) after they defeated Baruch Shmailov (ISR) & Manuel Lombardo (ITA). 


The Men's Épée Individual GOLD went to Romain Cannone (FRA) as he defeated Gergely Siklosi (HUN) 15-10. The BRONZE medal went to Igor Reizlin (UKR) after a 15-12 win over Andrea Santarelli (ITA)

The Women's Foil Individual saw Lee Kiefer (USA) winning GOLD with a 15-13 victory against Inna Deriglazova (ROC). The BRONZE medal was collected by Larisa Korobeynikova (ROC) after she won 15-12 against Alice Volpi (ITA). 


GOLD for the Chinese pair of Tingmao Shi/Han Wang in the Women's Synchronised 3m Springboard with a score of 326.40. SILVER went to Jennifer Abel/Melissa Citrini Beaulieu (CAN) who scored 300.78 while BRONZE was collected by Lena Hentschel/Tina Punzel (GER) as they scored 284.97. The GB pairing of Grace Reid/Katherine Torrance finished in sixth with a score of 269.10.



The Women's Road Race saw a surprise winner as Anna Kiesenhofer (AUT) stormed to the GOLD ahead of Annemiek Van Vluten (NED) who crossed for SILVER and Elisa Longo Borghini (ITA) collected BRONZE. GB's Lizzie Deignan finished ninth while team-mate Anna Shackley didn't finish.  


The Women's Team GOLD went to San An/Minhee Jang/Chaeyoung Kang (KOR) after a 6-0 win over the trio of Svetlana Gomboeva/Elena Osipova/Ksenia Perova (ROC) who claimed SILVER. The German trio of Michelle Kroppen/Charline Schwarz/Lisa Unruh secured the BRONZE with a 5-1 win over Karyna Dziominskaya/Karyna Kazlouskaya/Hanna Marusava (BLR).



Team GB News


A huge upset in the Women's -57kg as defending double Olympic champion Jade Jones lost 16-12 to Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin (EOR) who won the Bronze at Rio 2016.

An opening loss in the defence of their title for Team GB as they lost out 2-1 to Germany. 

Out on the water, Vicky Thornley finished third in the Women's Single Sculls quarter-finals to advance into the semi-finals while Graeme Thomas/John Collins finished second in their semi-final to reach the final of the Men's Double Sculls. 


In the pool, defending champion Adam Peaty eased into Monday's final of the Men's 100m Breaststroke with a time of 57.63 and will be joined by fellow Brit James Wilby who qualified in sixth with a time of 59.00. Cassie Wild & Kathleen Dawson both advanced into the 100m Backstroke semi-finals.

In the Dressage, success for the trio of Charlotte Dujardin, Lottie Fry & Carl Hester who all advanced to their respective finals as well as sealing team qualification. 



Victories for Ben Whittaker, Luke McCormack and Charley Davison in the ring. 

Another win for the pair of Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith with a straight sets victory over Canadian duo Joshua Hurlburt-Yu/Josephine Wu.
