Tokyo 2020 Day One

The official opening day of action saw a flurry of events and for this year's blog, there will be two sections for each day in Medals and Team GB News.

Medals

The first medals of the games came in the Women's 10m Air Rifle as Yang Qian (CHN) secured GOLD with an Olympic record score of 251.8 points. Anastasiia Galashina (ROC) claimed SILVER with a score of 251.8 while Nina Christen (SUI) collected BRONZE with a score of 230.6. Javad Foroughi (IRN) won the GOLD in the Men's 10m Air Pistol with Damir Mikec (SRB) taking SILVER and Wei Pang (CHN) who claimed the BRONZE.


Richard Carapaz (ECU) cruised to GOLD in the Men's Road Race and became only the second Ecuadorian gold medallist in the country's history. SILVER was claimed by Wolt Van Aert (BEL) who edged out Tadej Pogacar (SLO) on the line who took the BRONZE. GB's highest finisher was Adam Yates in ninth. 


Hou Zhihui (CHN) won GOLD
in the Women's -49kg Weightlifting with a Olympic record score of 210 ahead of Saikhom Chanu Mirabai (IND) who took SILVER and Cantika Windy Aisah (INA) who claimed BRONZE.


Naohisa Takato (JPN) won the battle for GOLD in the Men's 60kg Judo final defeating Yang Yung-wei (TPE) who took SILVER. BRONZES went to Yeldos Smetov (KAZ) and Luka Mkheidze (FRA) as they defeated Won Jin Kim (KOR) and Tornike Tsjakadoea (NED). 

The Women's 48kg final saw Distria Krasniqi (KOS) take GOLD as she defeated Funa Tonaki (JPN) who took SILVER. BRONZES went to Daria Bilodid (UKR) & Urantsetseg Munkhbat (MGL) as they won battles against Shira Rishony (ISR) & Catarina Costa (POR).


The Mixed Team Archery saw GOLD go to An San/Kim Je-deok (KOR) after they defeated the pairing of Steve Wijler/Gabriela Schloesser (NED) 5-3 in the final. The Mexican pairing of Alejandra Valencia/Luis Alvarez took the BRONZE with a 6-2 win over Turkish duo Mete Gazoz/Yasemin Anagoz.


Yiwen Sun (CHN) narrowly took GOLD in the Womens Epee Individiual winning 11-10 against Ana Maria Popescu (ROU) who took SILVER. BRONZE went to Katrina Lehis (EST) after a 15-8 win against Aizanat Murtazaeva (ROC). The Men's Sabre Individual saw GOLD go to Aron Szilagyi (HUN) who won 15-7 over Luigi Samele (ITA) who took SILVER. BRONZE went to Kim Junghwan (KOR) who won 15-11 against Sandro Bazadze (GEO).


The Men's 58kg saw Vito Dell'Aquila (ITA) win 16-12 to take the GOLD over Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi (TUN) who took SILVER. BRONZES went to Jun Jang (KOR) & Mikhail Artamonov (ROC) as they defeated Salim Omar (HUN) and Lucas Lautaro Guzman (ARG). 

The Women's 49kg GOLD went to Panipak Wongpattanakit (THA) as she defeated Adriana Iglesias Cerezo (ESP) who took SILVER. BRONZES went to Tijana Bogdanovic (SRB) and Abishag Semberg (ISR) after they defeated Miyu Yamada (JPN) and Rukiye Yildrim (TUR). 



Team GB News

Defending champion Adam Peaty cruised into the Men's 100m Breastroke semi-finals in 57.56 seconds (the eighth fastest time in history with fellow Brit James Wilby qualifying in sixth. Aimee Willmott and Max Litchfield also advanced in their events.



Also in the water, Helen Glover's hopes of defending her Women's Pairs title suffered a blow as she and partner Polly Swann could only qualify third in their heat for the semi-finals. 

On the courts, double success over French pairs as Andy Murray/Joe Salisbury advanced in the Men's Tennis Doubles with a win over second seeds
Pierre-Hughes Herbet/Nicolas Mahut while Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith won in the Mixed Badminton Doubles against Thom Gigquel/Delphine Delrue

Tennis also saw a loss for Heather Watson against Anna-Lena Friedsam (GER) and a win for Jamie Murray/Neal Skupski over Andres Molteni (ARG)

Max Whitlock
eased into the Pommel Horse final with 14.900 points as he took a step towards defending his title.


Charlotte Fry eased into the final of the Individual Dressage by topping her group with a score of 77.096% with partner Everdale. 

Karriss Artingstall
advanced to the next stage after defeating Keamogetse Sadie Kenosi (BOT). 




After a 2-0 win over Chile earlier in the week, The Womens footballers sealed a spot in the next round with a 1-0 win over hosts Japan with Ellen White scoring the winner to take her total to three goals in two games.
