Tokyo 2020 Day Four

Day Four became the busiest day so far with 22 medal events across 14 different sports which included a mix of all three medal types including history made in some events for the first time since the early 1900's.

Day Four opened with the Women's Individual as Flora Duffy (BER) stormed to GOLD to become the first ever Bermudan Olympic champion and joy for GB as Georgia Taylor-Brown fought off a flat tire late in the Biking section to collect SILVER. The BRONZE medal went to Katie Zaferes (USA) while GB duo Jess Learmouth and Vicky Holland finished in ninth and 13th. 


Double joy for GB in the day's opening event in the pool as Tom Dean won GOLD in the Men's 200m Freestyle just ahead of fellow Brit Duncan Scott who scooped SILVER with Fernando Scheffer (BRA) collecting BRONZE. The 1-2  for GB is the first in the pool since 1908!.

An Olympic Record for Kaylee McKeown (AUS) as she won GOLD in the Women's 100m Backstroke ahead of Kylie Masse (CAN) who scooped SILVER and Regan Smith (USA) who secured BRONZE. GB's Kathleen Dawson finished in sixth. 

A 1-2 for ROC in the Men's 100m Backstroke as Evgeny Rylov narrowly won GOLD ahead of fellow Russian Kliment Kolesnikov while Ryan Murphy(USA) collected BRONZE

The final medal event of the day in the pool saw a huge shock as 17-year old Lydia Jacoby (USA) won GOLD ahead of Tatjana Schoenmaker (RSA) who scooped SILVER and Lilly King (USA) who collected BRONZE.


The Women's +67kg saw GOLD won by Millica Mandic (SRB) as she defeated Dabin Lee (KOR)BRONZES for GB's Bianca Walkden and Althea Laurin (FRA) as they defeated Aleksandra Kowalczuk (POL) and Aminata Charlene Traore (CIV).

In the Men's +80kg, GOLD won by Vladislav Larin (ROC) as he defeated Dejan Georgievski (MKD). BRONZES for Don Kyo In (KOR) and Rafael Yunier Alba Castillo (CUB) as they defeated Hongyi Sun (CHN) and Ivan Konrad Trajkovic (SLO).


The Women's Team saw GOLD won by the Russian quartet of Lillia Akhaimova, Viktoriia Listunova, Angelina Melnikova & Vladislava Urazova) with a score of 169.528. The USA quartet of Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee & Grace McCallum) took SILVER with 166.096. GB's quartet of Amelie Morgan, Alice Kinsella and sisters Jennifer and Jessica Gadirova collected BRONZE with a total of 164.096, the first GB medal in the event since 1928.

The Women's Softball GOLD was won by the hosts Japan as they secured a 2-0 win over USA who took SILVER. BRONZE went to Canada as they won 3-2 against Mexico

The Women's Kayak GOLD went to Ricarda Funk (GER) as she finished ahead of Maialen Chourraut (ESP) who took SILVER and Jessica Fox (AUS) who collected BRONZE. GB's Kimberley Woods finished in tenth.


A clean sweep in the Women's Cross Country for Switzerland as Jolanda Neff took GOLD ahead of Sina Frei who scooped SILVER and Linda Indergand who collected BRONZE. GB's Evie Richards finished in seventh. 



In the Women's Synchronised 10m Platform, Yuxi Chen/Jiaqi Zhang (CHN) won GOLD with a score of 363.78 ahead of Jessica Parratto/Delaney Schnell (USA) who scooped SILVER by scoring 310.80 and Gabriela Garcia Agundez/ Alejandra Loza Oroczo (MEX) who claimed BRONZE with 299.70. GB pair Eden Cheng/Lois Toulson finished in seventh on 289.26.




The Dressage Team event saw GOLD go to German trio Dorothee Schnieder, Isabell Werth & Jessica Von Bredow-Werndl. The USA trio of Adrienne Lyle, Steffen Peters & Sabine Schut-Kery took SILVER. BRONZE went to GB trio Charlotte Dujardin, Carl Hester & Lottie Fry.


In the Women's Epée Team, GOLD went to Estonia with a 36-32 win over Korea who took SILVER. BRONZE went to Italy after they defeated China 23-21.




The Men's -81kg GOLD was won by Takanori Nagase (JPN) as he defeated Saeid Mollaei (MGL). BRONZES went to Matthias Casse (BEL) and Shamil Borchashvili (AUT) as they overcame Tato Grigalashvili (GEO) and Dominic Ressel (GER).

In the Women's -63kg, Clarisse Agbengnenou (FRA) took GOLD as she defeated Tina Trstenjak (SLO). BRONZES went to Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (CAN) and Maria Centracchio (ITA) as they overcame Anriquelis Barrios (VEN) and Juul Franssen (NED).


The 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team saw the pair of Ranxin Jiang/Wei Pang (CHN) win GOLD ahead of Vitalina Batsarashkina/Artem Chernousov (ROC) who scooped SILVER while Olena Kostevych/Oleh Omelchuk (UKR) claimed BRONZE as they defeated Zorana Arunovic/Damir Mikec (SRB). 

In the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team, Qian Yang/Hoaran Yang (CHN) won GOLD ahead of Mary Caroylnn Tucker/Lucas Kozniesky (USA) who scooped SILVER while Yulia Karimova/Sergey Kamenskiy (ROC) claimed BRONZE as they defeated Eunji Kwon/Taeyun Nam (KOR).


History made on the waves with Italo Ferreira (BRA) becoming the Men's first Olympic champion by taking GOLD ahead of Kanoa Igarashi (JPN). BRONZE went to Owen Wright (AUS) as he overcame Gabriel Medina (BRA).

The Women's event saw GOLD for Carissa Moore (USA) as she defeated Bianca Buitendag (RSA). BRONZE went to Amuro Tsuzuki (JPN) as she overcame Caroline Marks (USA).


The Women's 59kg saw an Olympic Record for Hsing-Chun Kuo (TPE) as she won GOLD with a score of 236 ahead of Polina Guryeva (TKM) who scooped SILVER with 217 while Mikiko Andoh (JPN) collected BRONZE with a score of 214. GB's Zoe Smith finished eighth with a score of 200.

The Women's 64kg saw GOLD won by Maude G Charron (CAN) with a total of 236 ahead of Giorgia Bordignon (ITA) who scored 232 for SILVER and Wen-Huei Chen (TPE) who scored 230 to take the BRONZE. GB's Sarah Davies finished in fifth. 




Team GB News

A heavy defeat for the GB men as they lost 33-7 to reigning Olympic champions Fiji in their final pool game before a stunning comeback from 21-0 down in the quarter final saw a 26-21 win over USA which sets up a semi against New Zealand on Day Five. 



The Women secured top spot in their group after a 1-1 draw with Canada with Caroline Weir scoring for GB. The win sets up a clash with Australia in the last eight on day seven.

The pair of Andy Murray/Joe Salisbury advanced to the last eight while Liam Broady reached the third round of the Men's Singles



Success in the ring saw Caroline Dubois reach the last 16 of the Light Welterweight while Pat McCormack advanced into the last eight of the Welterweight
